The Vain Lion

A Lion wanted to impress a woman so he showed off his mane. Look at my hair, he said, isn't it long & beautiful? You should love me for this. The woman responded, Lion, I cannot love you for your hair because it has knots. The Lion, embarrassed by this, said, Well, what about my nails? They are sharp & clean & have never been chipped! You must love me for this. No, said the woman, I cannot love you for that. Your nails are so clean, they look as if they have never been used, which makes me think you are a lazy Lion. I am not a lazy Lion, he said, just look at my teeth. I use them all the time to bite into big & scary animals! I can see that, said the woman, because you have bits of food stuck in them. The Lion cried out, Oh, you are an impossible woman! & then the woman said, Lion, even if your hair was not tangled, your claws used & your teeth free of food, I would not love you. If you want to be a show-off, be prepared for your flaws to be found.
